Located on a greenfield site on Major Mackenzie Drive between Jane Street and Highway 400, the new facility provides Southwest York Region with a comprehensive range of expanded and enhanced acute care services.
The new 1.2 million-square-foot health care centre, which also features over 1800 above grade parking spaces, opened for patient care in early 2021.
The design consists of an 11-storey tower with a 5-storey podium. In addition, there is a lower level for a total of approximately 1.2 million square feet (including the Central Utility Plant and Mechanical & Electrical floor), a portion of which will be built as shelled space to accommodate capacity for flexibility and future growth.
The new facility consists of 367 beds and is the first hospital in Canada to feature fully integrated “smart” technology. This technology features systems and medical devices that can speak directly to one another to maximize information exchange.
The new Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital is LEED® Canada-NC 2009 Silver certified and includes the following features:
Unique to this project was the inclusion of a separately procured contract for managed ICAT services infrastructure. Plenary Health entered into an additional agreement with the Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital selected provider, Compugen Inc., for the delivery of certain IT scope.
This unique delivery approach ensures increased flexibility for Mackenzie Health in serving their short and long term IT needs.
The project will provide substantial economic support to the local community through job creation. Approximately 600 workers were on site at the peak of construction.
