Plenary Health’s Bridgepoint Active Healthcare in Toronto has been awarded a 2015 National Healthcare Design Award by The American Institute of Architects (AIA) Academy of Architecture for Health (AAH).

Bridgepoint Hospital

The $622 million LEED Silver-certified facility in Ontario was the single winner in the category of Built Project Over $25 Million in Construction Cost.

CEO of Plenary Concessions, Mike Marasco, said: “The iconic design of this new hospital and connection to the community has played a big role in the success of Bridgepoint’s new model of caring for patients with complex chronic disease. We are delighted to be part of their success.”

“This building optimizes its expansive views and an abundance of natural light to create an uplifting and restorative environment for patients and staff,” commented the AAH jury. “The plan is clearly laid out, with strategically placed lounges and common spaces. The rooftop public garden and seating area is a great amenity for patients and staff which completes the facility’s strong connection to its natural setting.”

The jury also commented on the restoration and incorporation of the adjacent historic Don Jail (1864) as part of Bridgepoint, “By renovating the site’s former jail into administrative offices, the design connects the facility to the history of the site and enriches the entire complex.”

The project’s award winning design team included:

  • Plenary Group;
  • Innisfree;
  • PCL Constructors Canada;
  • HDR Architecture / Diamond Schmitt Architects;
  • Johnson Controls; and
  • Ventin Group Ltd. & E.R.A. Architects Inc.

Previous recognition for Bridgepoint includes prizes at the 2014 Pug Awards, the Paul Oberman Award for Adaptive Reuse and Heritage Restoration (Architectural Conservancy Ontario) and a Design Excellence Award from the Ontario Architects Association.

Bridgepoint has also achieved LEED® Silver Certification from the Canada Green Building Council.
