Sustainability and stewardship

We are continually working to minimize energy usage, cut carbon emissions, increase recycling, and reduce waste in our offices and across our projects.

In North America we regularly implement the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards and seek certification for all of our projects, often to uppermost LEED levels, resulting in sustainable infrastructure that our communities can be proud of for decades to come.

Our corporate giving and volunteer program combines the interests of our employees, the strengths of our firm, and the needs of the communities in which we live and work. We are proud to be supporting some exceptional organizations, including:

• LA Mission (Los Angeles, CA): Los Angeles Mission breaks the cycle of homelessness and poverty, and is on the front lines for providing meals, hot showers, safe shelter and other life-giving support to people in need.
• Dream Makers (Denver, CO): Dream Makers connects the community to the needs of youth aging out of the foster care system who are left to fend for themselves as they transition to adulthood. The organization fulfills “dreams”, provides crisis needs, and a marketplace for makers who are former foster youth.
• Tampa Bay Watch (Tampa, FL): Tampa Bay Watch trains and organizes citizen volunteers, students, at-risk youth, and civic organizations to participate in environmental projects while heightening community awareness of the fragile nature and importance of the environment.
• Indspire (Canada): Indspire serves First Nations, Inuit and Metis students in remote communities, rural and urban centres across Canada. Indspire disburses financial awards, delivers programs and shares resources with the goal of increasing graduation rates for Indigenous students.
• Vancouver Food Runners (Vancouver, BC): Vancouver Food Runners’ matches 160 food donors to more than 100 non-profit partners and uses 1600 driver volunteers to efficiently and cost-effectively transport food to those experiencing food insecurity. In 2021, VFR rescued more than 710,000 lbs of food, equivalent to 592,500 meals.

We contribute to the infrastructure industry in North America by participating in policy debates and making submissions to state, provincial and federal government inquiries.

As part of our commitment to share best practices, we regularly attend, arrange, contribute to and sponsor industry conferences, task forces, project site tours, presentations, and feedback sessions with our current and prospective clients.

We are members of, and contribute to the work undertaken by, a host of key infrastructure and industry bodies.

We are members of such bodies as the Association for the Improvement of American Infrastructure, the American Road and Transportation Builders Association, and the Canadian Council for Public-Private Partnerships.
